The city of Brno, located in the heart of Europe and just a stone’s throw from Vienna, ranks 6th among the best student cities in the world according to the QS indicator, following only Munich (Germany), Montreal (Canada), Melbourne (Australia), Berlin (Germany), and Amsterdam (Netherlands). Brno also boasts the second-highest percentage of students among all cities worldwide. As the main center of Moravia, Brno has a population of 378,965 and is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic after Prague. It is situated in the southeastern part of the country, at the confluence of the Svitava and Svratka rivers, about 100 km from Vienna and 200 km from Prague.
Annexed to the Czech Republic in 1993, Brno has been nicknamed "the Czech Manchester" for its concentration of globally significant companies alongside modern architectural landmarks. Villa Tugendhat, built in the 1920s, is a famous example of functionalist architecture (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002), while the recently completed AZ Tower is the tallest skyscraper in the Czech Republic.
Brno’s international airport is easily accessible from major European capitals thanks to the many low-cost airlines operating in the city.
