The Medical University of Plovdiv is one of the four public universities in Bulgaria and was founded in 1945. It includes the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Public Health, along with a Department of Languages and Specialized Training and a 2,000-bed hospital. In 1950, the faculty became the independent Medical Academy of Plovdiv. It was renamed the Higher Medical Institute of Plovdiv in 1972. The Faculty of Dentistry was established in 1974, and a Medical College was created in 1997 as a branch of the Medical University of Plovdiv.
In 2002, the Higher Medical Institute was renamed the Medical University of Plovdiv following a decision by the Bulgarian National Assembly. The university has more than 3,500 national and international students and over 600 faculty members and researchers. Its facilities include laboratories, clinics, and units for diagnostics and treatment, research activities, and the training of medical and dental students. The Central University Library offers students 170,000 volumes in multiple languages, an internet room, and a local network system (with access to Medline and Micromedex). The university publishes a journal called Folia Medica, which is exchanged with over 326 specialists from 54 countries and indexed in Medline.
DEGREE COURSES
Medicine: The Medical University of Plovdiv offers a medical degree program in English for international students (360 ECTS credits, mandatory attendance). The program follows a "Problem-Based Learning" approach, focusing on solving real-world health problems, making the curriculum more dynamic and realistic. Duration: 6 years. Start Date: Last week of September.
Dentistry: The Dentistry degree program is also offered in English for international students (360 ECTS credits, mandatory attendance). Graduates receive the title of "Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD)." Training is provided in modern, fully equipped facilities. Duration: 5.5 years. Start Date: Last week of September.
Pharmacy: The Pharmacy degree program is offered in English for international students (300 ECTS credits, mandatory attendance). Students are trained in modern, fully equipped facilities. Duration: 5 years. Start Date: Last week of September.
The city
The university is located in Plovdiv, the historic capital of Thrace and the second-largest city in Bulgaria (with approximately 350,000 inhabitants) after the capital, Sofia. The city has long been a cultural crossroads due to its rich and millennia-spanning history. It is renowned for the beauty of its Old Town, featuring Bulgarian Renaissance-style architecture from the early 19th century, which is among the best-preserved in the nation.
Plovdiv is situated on the banks of the Maritsa River, in the southern part of the Plovdiv Plain, an alluvial plain that forms the western section of the Upper Thracian Plain, approximately 152 km southeast of Sofia. On October 17, 2014, it was designated, alongside Matera, as the European Capital of Culture for 2019.
