The Medical University of Sofia is one of the four public medical universities in Bulgaria and the oldest institution for higher medical education in the country. It was founded by His Majesty Tsar Ferdinand with a decree in 1917 as the Faculty of Medicine of Sofia University, and since its establishment, more than 60,000 specialists have graduated from one of the best medical universities in Bulgaria.
The Sofia Medical University has four faculties (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Public Health) and 14 university hospitals, which represent a valuable resource for professional medical growth. The available English-language study programs at the Sofia Medical University include Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. The university has over 6,000 national and international students (approximately 1,600 from abroad) and more than 800 professors and teachers.
The main objectives of the Sofia Medical University are higher education at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and healthcare levels. The university is internationally recognized for its achievements in cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmic surgery, high-tech diagnostics, cardiovascular and hereditary disease prevention programs, bone marrow transplants, the development of new synthetic and natural compounds, and more.
Sofia Medical University began exchanging students in 2000 when the Erasmus program was opened for Bulgaria as a pre-accession country in 1999. Over a 20-year period, more than 140 Erasmus inter-institutional agreements have been signed with partner universities from 25 program countries and 8 partner countries.
DEGREE COURSES
Medicine: Bachelor's degree in Medicine in English for international students (360 ECTS, mandatory attendance). The medical degree program at Sofia Medical University follows the "Problem-Based Learning" approach. This teaching method focuses on solving real health problems, making the degree much more dynamic and realistic. Duration: 6 years. Start date: early October.
Dentistry: Bachelor's degree in Dentistry in English for international students (360 ECTS, mandatory attendance). Graduates receive the title of "Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD)." Students are trained in modern, fully equipped facilities within the faculty. Duration: 5.5 years. Start date: early October.
Pharmacy: Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy in English for international students (300 ECTS, mandatory attendance). Students are trained in modern, fully equipped facilities within the faculty. Duration: 5 years. Start date: early October.
The city
The university is located in Sofia, the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is the main administrative, industrial, cultural, and transport center of the country. With a population of about 1.5 million people, which doubles when considering the metropolitan area, Sofia is also the largest and most densely populated city in Bulgaria.
Sofia is located in the western part of the country, at the foot of Mount Vitosha. The city has sixteen universities, including the Sofia Medical University, founded in 1917. Major attractions include the Boyana Church (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979), St. George Church, St. Sofia Church, and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
ADMISSION PROCESS

The exam consists of a written multiple-choice test in English (80 questions) on biology (40 questions) and chemistry (40 questions).
