Why choose Charles University

  • An outstanding university with a well-established international reputation.

  • Gradual, hands-on training: solid foundations in the early years, followed by a progressive move to pre-clinical and clinical subjects.

Did you know? Albert Einstein taught at Charles University

In April 1911, Albert Einstein was appointed full professor of Theoretical Physics in Prague, at the university then known as the German University of Prague and today part of the academic tradition of Charles University. By then, Einstein was already famous for his early work on the Theory of Relativity and for important studies in thermodynamics and molecular physics, with a growing interest in quantum theory and statistical physics.

Einstein moved from Zurich to Prague with his first wife, Mileva, and their two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard. The family lived in a flat in the Smíchov district (today Lesnická 7). Einstein loved to recall his walks along the Vltava to the Institute of Physics in Viničná Street, which he described as “excellent”, with “a very good library”.

Prague won him over with its historic, romantic charm. There, Einstein joined a lively intellectual circle and grew close to figures such as Berta Fanta, Hugo Bergmann, Max Brod and Franz Kafka. During his time in Prague, he was invited to the first, legendary Solvay Conference, where he met Planck, Lorentz, Marie Curie and Poincaré for the first time. Many scientists came to Prague to exchange ideas with him, the most important of them being Paul Ehrenfest.

As a full professor, Einstein gave regular lectures on mechanics, molecular physics and thermodynamics. During his Prague years, his interest in quantum theory waned and he began working more systematically on a relativistic theory of gravitation. In Prague he published 11 papers, 6 of them on relativity: particularly significant work which, together with the papers that immediately followed, paved the way for General Relativity.
